Living in the Philadelphia area, there is a constant supply of new places to explore and activities to do. I’ve recently been checking out the line up for the expo centers in the area to find something different to do. This weekend, I chose to go to the SEPOS Orchid Show at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA. The tickets were $5 online before the show and $7 at the door for the three day event. I live a few miles away and have an easy drive to the expo center, but you could very easily take an Uber instead.
I have never had much of a green thumb, but I love to gaze upon the beauty of nature. There were hundreds of different orchids of all shapes, colors and sizes. There were many different vendors and growers willing to answer any and all questions about orchids. I had no idea there were so many different types of orchids that grow in ecosystems all across the world.
I had the chance to talk to a grower from Woodstream Orchids in Huntingtown, Maryland. Most orchids are notorious for being difficult to keep alive in a house without high humidity and full sun exposure because they are native to tropical rain forest climates. He showed us a species of orchid that grows on the rain forest floor and does not need large amounts of sun exposure or humidity making it a great house plant. The orchid he showed me is called a slipper orchid (pictured right). This type of orchid needs a east or west facing window, watering about 2 times per weeks and fertilizer once per week when the orchid is not in bloom (orchids do not absorb any nutrients from the soil they are in). He convinced me that even I could keep this orchid alive. I ended up buying two beautiful slipper orchids that I will hopefully be able keep alive (I will keep you updated if this holds true)!!
I had such a great time learning all this new information about orchids and it was well worth the price of admission. It was such a beautiful spring day, and I ended up wearing a casual weekend look that is perfect for walking around all day. The jeans and the shirt are extremely soft to the touch and easy to throw on for a quick around the town look. The sandals are my new favorites with just a little heel to them making them easy to dress up or down.
